Unidentified gunmen fatally shot a prominent Sikh doctor in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Saturday night, according to local authorities.
Manmohan Singh, 35, a well-known practitioner of Greek Medicine based in the heart of Peshawar city, was intercepted by the assailants while on his way home. They opened fire indiscriminately, leaving him in a pool of blood before fleeing the scene.
Despite being rushed to the district headquarters hospital, Manmohan succumbed to his injuries en route. The attack took place in Rasheed Garhi, falling under the jurisdiction of the iconic Takoot police station of Peshawar. In a similar incident the day before, Tarlok Sikh, a Sikh trader, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in the same locality. Tarlok sustained bullet injuries to his leg when unknown gunmen targeted him on his way home.A senior official from the Counter Terrorism Department of Peshawar confirmed the incidents, suggesting that both cases appear to be targeted killings. “We are currently investigating these incidents, which bear the hallmarks of targeted killings,” the official stated.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for both attacks, declaring, “The soldiers of the Islamic State have eliminated a follower of an ‘a polytheistic’ sect of Sikh in the jurisdiction of Yaka Toot police station in Peshawar. He was killed by gunfire. Thank God,” as stated by ISIS on Sunday. The Sikh community in Peshawar is now gripped by fear and terror following these incidents. Official estimates suggest that around 15,000 Sikhs reside in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.
These attacks mark the fourth instance of violence against Sikhs in Pakistan since the beginning of this year. In May, Sardar Singh was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Lahore, the provincial capital of Pakistani Punjab. In April, gunmen killed Dayal Singh in Peshawar. In May 2022, two members of the Sikh community were killed by gunmen in Peshawar.
The Sikh community, considered the most powerful minority in Pakistan, has been living under constant threat since 2015. Terrorist organizations, including ISIS, have persistently targeted this small community.
Prominent Sikhs in Pakistan have been urging the government to take measures to ensure their security, but their pleas have gone unanswered.

“The government has failed to provide security to the Sikh community in Pakistan. Over the past few years, around thirty Sikh individuals have been killed, instilling a pervasive sense of insecurity within our community,” expressed Mahinder Pal, a prominent member of the Sikh community-based in Nankana Sahib, in an interview.
“On one hand, we face threats and violence from terrorists and unidentified individuals. On the other hand, influential Muslims advise us to convert to Islam in order to gain better opportunities,” Mahinder Pal shared with this correspondent, highlighting the additional pressure placed upon the Sikh community.
In 2018, Mahinder Pal made history by earning a place in the Pakistan National Cricket Academy (NCA) as an emerging player. He is a right-arm fast bowler by profession. However, Mahinder Pal Singh revealed that influential Muslim professionals had approached him with an offer to join Pakistan’s National Cricket Team on the condition that he convert to Islam.
“I declined the offer,” Mahinder affirmed to Republic, emphasizing his refusal to compromise his religious beliefs.
