In a landmark visit shortly before celebrating its first anniversary, the Hong Kong Ambassadors Club (HKAC), led by The Hon Jeffrey Lam, GBM, GBS, JP, Member of Legislative Council and Executive Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and Patrick Tsang, Chairman of Tsangs Group, undertook a significant journey to China’s north-western Gansu Province. The delegation, which included key figures in Hong Kong’s political and business spheres, engaged in strategic discussions aimed at fostering bilateral relations, boosting foreign investments, and exploring collaborative opportunities in industries such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing, sustainability technologies, culture, and tourism.
The capital city of Lanzhou, situated along the Yellow River, played host to the delegation as they conferred with local leaders, including Zhuang Guotai, the Party Secretary and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference of the Gansu Province. The discussions centered around strategies to enhance global connectivity in the region, particularly focusing on Gansu’s status as a vital component of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
One of the pivotal outcomes of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between HKAC and the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Gansu Province. This MoU aims to promote bilateral business and investment, fostering stronger ties among Gansu Province, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with Hong Kong serving as an international financial and innovation technology hub.
During their stay, the delegation explored key industrial and renewable energy facilities in Gansu, including the 7 MkW Photovoltaics Power Station of China Resources Power Co., the Innovation and Science Centre in Lanzhou, and the Smart Manufacturing Base by Hailiang Group Co., a leading Chinese solar panel producer. The delegation engaged in meetings with representatives from economic, social, and cultural departments, aiming to broaden their understanding of the region’s potential and collaboration opportunities.
“The Gansu Province has enormous potential in relation to tourism, trade, and renewable energy. HKAC is not dedicated to Hong Kong and countries abroad alone. It is a vehicle to foster relations with Mainland China. Our successful visit to Gansu Province and its capital, Lanzhou, proves that HKAC knows no boundaries. We are delighted to have developed HKAC as the platform of choice in such a short time,” commented The Hon Jeffrey Lam, GBM, GBS, JP.
Patrick Tsang, Chairman of Tsangs Group, expressed pride in HKAC’s achievements, stating, “We can say with some pride that HKAC has created in a very short time a global network of stakeholders, investors, and supporters who share our values of reshaping Hong Kong as the financial and business metropolis of choice in East Asia and beyond.”
Jonathan Lamport, CEO of A-Grade Energy Limited, shared insights gained during the official delegation visit, highlighting the remarkable achievements of Gansu Province in renewable energy development. “I was honored to join the official delegation visit to the Gansu Province, where we gained valuable insights into renewable energy development. As one of the top five provinces in green and clean tech, Lanzhou showcased remarkable achievements, particularly in photovoltaics and wind power.”
Lamport further emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange sessions, stating, “The excursions and knowledge-exchange sessions greatly enriched our company’s knowledge as we aim to bring the latest scientific research and technological advancements from our Hong Kong company and universities to Gansu Province to foster collaboration and collectively drive forward the green energy development on a national level.”
In conclusion, the HKAC’s inaugural visit to Gansu Province has not only strengthened bilateral ties but has also paved the way for collaborations in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability technologies. The delegation’s engagements with stakeholders and visits to prominent renewable energy facilities underscore their commitment to global connectivity and knowledge exchange in building a sustainable future. This aligns with their broader goal of reinforcing the reshaping of Hong Kong’s role as a global green finance and innovation technology hub.
