Denmark Summons U.S Diplomat: Greenland’s $1 Trillion Treasure: Why Denmark Rejected U.S. Plans Despite Trump’s Push? PC-YHH

Denmark has escalated its confrontation with the United States over Greenland, summoning Washington’s top diplomat in Copenhagen after reports surfaced of U.S. citizens allegedly conducting influence operations in Greenland. The development comes amid former President Donald Trump’s repeated attempts to acquire the resource-rich Arctic island—offers Denmark has rejected outright for more than a century.

According to Danish public broadcaster DR, at least three U.S. citizens linked to the Trump administration allegedly engaged in covert political activities on the island, raising alarm bells in Copenhagen. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed he summoned U.S. Charge d’Affaires Mark Stroh for urgent talks, calling any such interference “unacceptable.”

“Greenland is not for sale, and its future will be decided by the people of Greenland,” Rasmussen declared, reiterating Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory.

Greenland Stands Firm: Denmark’s $2.05 Billion Defense Boost Sends a Clear Message to Trump

Denmark’s $2.05 Billion Arctic Defense Package

In a move directly tied to growing U.S. ambitions, Denmark unveiled a 2.05 billion USD (14.3 billion DKK) defense budget expansion focused on the Arctic and North Atlantic. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen outlined the plan, which includes:

This comes on top of a $1.2 billion package in December for Arctic defense, including new radar stations and cyber capabilities.

“The security situation in the Arctic is changing fast. We see Russian militarization, Chinese economic ambitions, and now U.S. political interference,” Poulsen said.

Why Greenland Matters: Facts & Figures

U.S. Ambitions: From 1867 to Trump

The U.S. has tried to buy Greenland at least three times:

  1. 1867 – After buying Alaska, U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward tried to purchase Greenland; Denmark refused.
  2. 1946 – Washington offered $100 million (≈ $1.2B today) after WWII; rejected again.
  3. 2019 – Trump proposed purchasing Greenland; Danish PM Mette Frederiksen called the idea “absurd,” prompting Trump to cancel a state visit in anger.

When asked in 2024 if he would rule out military action to secure Greenland, Trump said:

“I cannot.”

Denmark vs. U.S.: The Stark Contrast

Metric Denmark United States
GDP (2024) $475 billion $28.7 trillion
Defense Spending (2024) $6.5 billion (1.6% GDP) $877 billion (3.5% GDP)
Population 5.9 million 333 million
Military Personnel 16,000 active troops 1.3 million active, 811,000 reserves
Arctic Strategy Defense + climate focus, sovereignty priority Resource extraction + military control

Despite the disparity, Denmark holds a territorial and legal advantage—Greenland remains an autonomous Danish territory under international law, and any transfer would require approval from both Copenhagen and the Greenlandic parliament.

Greenland’s Firm Voice

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede stressed:

“We welcome cooperation on defense and development, but Greenland will never be handed over, sold, or taken.”

He confirmed Denmark’s new defense funding will also train Greenlandic security forces and improve emergency response in the Arctic region.

A Brewing Arctic Cold War Between Denmark And The U.S?

Experts warn that the Arctic could become the next global flashpoint. Russia has expanded its Northern Fleet bases, while China declared itself a “near-Arctic state” in 2018, funding research stations and mining projects.

Denmark’s new military spending signals its intent to resist not just U.S. ambitions but also the growing presence of Moscow and Beijing in the High North.

“This is about sovereignty. Greenland will not become the next Crimea,” said Arctic security analyst Marc Jacobsen.

Outlook

As ice caps melt and resources become accessible, the Arctic’s geopolitical importance will only grow. For now, Denmark’s $2.05 billion defense boost is its loudest declaration yet: Greenland’s future will be decided in Nuuk and Copenhagen—not Washington.

Whether Trump or future U.S. leaders heed that warning remains uncertain.
