New York: The Roosevelt Hotel owned by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Thursday announced that it will permanently close its doors for guests from October 31.
“We at The Roosevelt Hotel have enjoyed being a part of your stories, and an integral part of the history of Midtown Manhattan since 1924. But after almost 100 years of welcoming guests to New York, The Roosevelt Hotel is regretfully closing its doors permanently as of October 31, 2020,” the hotel stated in its Facebook post.
Located at the corner of Madison Avenue and 45th Street of New York’s Manhattan, The Roosevelt Hotel is owned by the Government of Pakistan through PIA Investments Limited.
“For those guests with future reservations, we are working on communicating alternative accommodations. We truly love each and every one of you. And may your passion for our Great City continue…as Teddy would have wanted,” the hotel added in its message.
The hotel originally opened in 1924 and it was taken by the national carrier on lease in 1979 and later purchased in 1999, according to Daily Pakistan.
This development comes months after the PTI government decided to not sell the iconic hotel located in Manhattan, New York. It had decided to run the hotel through a joint venture.
The hotel in its statement said that the decision has been taken due to economic reasons.
The Roosevelt Hotel is a historic luxury hotel, located at 45 East 45th Street (between Madison Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue) in Midtown Manhattan, Manhattan, New York City. The hotel, named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, opened on September 22, 1924. The hotel was closed for an extensive $65 million renovation from 1995 to 1997.
In October 2020, it was announced the hotel would permanently close due to continued financial losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The final day of operation was October 31, 2020.
According to media reports, Donald Trump is interested in buying the hotel from Pakistan International Airlines.
There are a total of 1,025 rooms in the hotel, including 52 suites. The 3,900-square-foot (360 m2) Presidential Suite has four bedrooms, a kitchen, formal living and dining areas, and a wrap-around terrace. The rooms are traditionally decorated, with mahogany wood furniture and light-colored bed coverings.
There are several eateries within the hotel. They include:
The “Roosevelt Grill”, which serves American food and regional specialties for breakfast.
The “Madison Club Lounge”, a bar and lounge which has a 30-foot (9.1 m) mahogany bar and features stained glass windows and a pair of fireplaces.
The “Vander Bar”, a bistro with modern decor, serving craft beers.
The Roosevelt has 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) of meeting and exhibit space, including two ballrooms and 17 additional meeting rooms ranging in size from 300 to 1,100 square feet (28 to 102 m2). It offers a business center. Other services include a concierge, fitness center, safety deposit boxes, valet laundry, valet or self-parking, and 15 retail tenants.
