In a tragic and harrowing incident, a terrorist attack targeted a Pakistan Army checkpost located in the Daraban area of Dera Ismail Khan, resulting in the loss of 23 brave soldiers. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of December 12, was meticulously orchestrated by a group of six terrorists, who employed a combination of tactics to breach the security post’s defenses.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the assailants’ initial attempt to enter the post was effectively foiled by the vigilant security forces. However, in a desperate bid, the terrorists resorted to a devastating tactic by ramming an explosive-laden vehicle into the post, followed by a suicide bombing attack. The ensuing explosions caused the collapse of the building, leading to the tragic loss of 23 soldiers. Simultaneously, all six terrorists were neutralized.
Security Forces Arrest Hundreds of Terrorists in a month in KPK
The ISPR has stated that sanitization operations are currently underway in the area to eliminate any potential remaining threats. Pakistan’s security forces remain unwavering in their determination to eradicate terrorism from the nation, and such sacrifices by our valiant soldiers only serve to strengthen this resolve.
In a separate incident, a commendable intelligence-based operation in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan resulted in the elimination of 17 terrorists on the nights of December 11 and 12. During the operation, a terrorist’ hideout was discovered and subsequently dismantled. Additionally, two soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice during another intelligence-based operation in the Kulachi area, where four terrorists were neutralized. The deceased terrorists were known to be actively involved in numerous acts of terrorism against security forces and the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians. Weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also seized during these operations.
In response to this tragic event, caretaker Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti has publicly condemned the “terrorist attack on the police station” and expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives.
This unfortunate incident follows a recent surge in terror-related activities, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan regions, following the cessation of the TTP’s ceasefire with the government in November of the previous year. The security situation remains challenging, as evidenced by a bomb blast targeting police personnel on November 3, which claimed five lives and injured over 20 individuals in DI Khan. Additionally, on October 31, unknown militants opened fire on a police camp in Dera Ismail Khan, resulting in the martyrdom of a policeman. That same day, two soldiers were martyred in an IED blast in the South Waziristan district.
Recent data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies indicates a 34 percent increase in anti-state violence last month, with KP experiencing the highest number of incidents, including 54 fatalities and 81 injuries.
As Pakistan grapples with the persistent threat of terrorism, it is imperative to address the root causes of extremism, bolster counter-terrorism efforts, and enhance security measures to ensure the safety of its citizens and security forces.
